Hate for Thanksgiving

For most of us Thanksgiving was a respite from the turmoil of politics. It was a time to spend with family and friends. To eat well. And, even if it meant a deliberate avoidance of election discussion, to enjoy some peace, quiet, and perhaps football.

Unless of course you are Donald Trump. Trump found time, while enjoying the parade of syncopates who sojourned to Mar-a-Lago to grovel at his feet, to air his usual grievances. His “Happy Thanksgiving” post on social media says it all:

Trump’s eldest son praised his father’s message, writing, “Legendary. Mean Tweets and soon world peace. We are back. Happy Thanksgiving America.” Of course, Don Jr. has visions of a dynasty dancing in his head this Christmas season.

He might have to do battle with J. D. Vance. The Vice-President-elect on Thanksgiving posted an edited image of Norman Rockwell’s famous 1943 Thanksgiving painting “Freedom from Want” on social media.

The painting depicts a man and a woman at the head of a table where a family is seated for their holiday meal. The woman, wearing a frilly apron, is serving a turkey as the patriarch watches over her.

In Vance’s perverse version, the man at the head of the table is Donald Trump, the woman is Vance, and the turkey is a Republican-dominated electoral map of the country.

Vance complained frequently during the campaign about people calling him weird. If he is serious about changing his image, he might want to stop posting things like this.
